Post-Match PC: Stuart Rushmere takes Player of the Match

Stuart Rushmere takes the Player of the Match award after a standout performance in England’s 4-2 win over India.

Even as India started strongly, England grew into the match and remained in control until the final hooter, exposing gaps in the Indian side that will need to be addressed if they are to progress to the next stage of the tournament.

8:10 PM | Full time: India 2-4 England

The final-quarter demons haunt India again as England turn the game around in the second half to seal a 4-2 victory.

IND 2-3 ENG

8:02 PM | 6 minutes to go: India under pressure

India are down to 10 men as Nilakanta Sharma receives a green card. England are awarded a penalty corner after Nilakanta’s stoppage is deemed to have breached the 5-metre mark.

IND 2-3 ENG

7:58 PM | India lose their referral

India lose their referral with nine minutes left on the clock. Could this prove costly, just as it did for the Indian women against China yesterday?

IND 2-3 ENG

7:55 PM | The scores could have been 3-3

As England take a 3-2 lead into the final quarter, a reminder of how fine the margins have been tonight.

India could have been level at 3-3 had Shilanand Lakra’s stick not got in the way of Abhishek’s shot in Q2, with the effort otherwise heading towards the goal.

7:47 PM | End of Q3: India 2-3 England

England have turned the game on its head in the third quarter, scoring twice to move from 1-2 down to a 3-2 lead.

India now have 15 minutes to find a way back into the contest.

7:45 PM | 43’ - England take the lead

Another field goal for England, this time Henry Croft with the finish. England have turned the game around and now lead India.

IND 2-3 ENG

7:40 PM | 38’ - Rushmere brings England level

England’s third penalty corner of the match goes begging, but they soon find their equalizer from open play. Making no mistake this time, Stuart Rushmere gets the final touch on a powerful ball into the circle, producing a superb deflection past Mohith.

IND 2-2 ENG

Half-time trivia | The story behind Sam Ward’s mask

England's forward Sam Ward has been wearing a protective mask since suffering a serious eye and facial injury after being struck by a hockey ball in 2019.

The England forward returned to international hockey after a long recovery and continues to compete at the highest level today.

7:19 PM | HT: India 2-1 England

This fixture has delivered everything it promised in the first half. India vs England is always an exciting contest, and this one has lived up to the billing right until the final seconds.

India have 30 more minutes to hold on to the lead, secure three points and move to the top of Pool D.

7:18 PM | Rushmere wins one back

Stuart Rushmere makes up for the two penalty corners he conceded to India, setting up one for England. But the resulting PC comes to nothing, with just 30 seconds left before half-time!

IND 2-1 ENG

7:12 PM | 24' It’s Dilpreet time!

Dilpreet Singh is in the right place at the right time!

A push off the goalkeeper’s foot falls kindly to him, and he makes no mistake, pushing it home to put India ahead.

Rushmere’s foot gives India another penalty corner, but England goalkeeper James Mazarelo stands tall to make the save.

IND 1-1 ENG

7:04 PM | 17’ - Harmanpreet levels it up

There’s no stopping Harmanpreet Singh’s drag-flick. A long drag followed by a powerful strike leaves the English goalkeeper with no chance. India step up and level the contest.

India appeared to be in control for much of the opening quarter, but one costly error allowed England to capitalize and take the lead.

6:59 PM | 14’ - England draw first blood

Advantage played by the umpire, and England make it count. A perfectly executed aerial India's half finds Nicholas Bandurak, who gets the slightest of touches to lift the ball into the back of the net.

Nothing Mohith H.S. could do about that one.

IND 0-1 ENG

6:54 PM | Manpreet steps up

Former India captain Manpreet Singh makes a crucial run to shut down the threat and clears the ball safely from the edge of the D

IND 0-0 ENG

IND 0-0 ENG

6:35 PM | Sam Ward: A player to watch

Sam Ward will be one of the players India will need to keep an eye on tonight. Away from the hockey pitch, the Indian and English players share a strong camaraderie, with Ward and Hardik Rai also teammates in the Hockey India League.

Come game time, however, the friendship will take a back seat as the two go head-to-head.

6:30 PM | India’s Starting XI is here

India name a strong Starting XI for their crucial Pool D clash against England, with Jugraj Singh returning to the side and young goalkeeper Mohith H.S. taking his place between the posts.

Starting XI: Mohith H.S. (GK), Harmanpreet Singh (C), Sumit, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay, Hardik Rai, Manpreet Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Abhishek.

Subs: Suraj Karkera (GK), Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Aditya Arjun Lalage, Dilpreet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Nilakanta Sharma.

6:25 PM | Good news from the Indian camp

Jugraj Singh appears to have received the all-clear and makes his return to the Starting XI for India against England.

A welcome boost for Team India ahead of a crucial Pool D clash.

6:15 PM | India vs England: Who will come out on top?

The previous Men's Pool D fixture between Pakistan and Wales ended in a 3-3 draw, making the equation much clearer ahead of India vs England.

A win for either side tonight will take them to six points and guarantee a top-two finish, while Pakistan and Wales can reach a maximum of four.

There is more at stake too. If both India and England progress to the second round, tonight’s result and points will carry forward into Pool E, making this clash even more significant.
